The 24-70 f4 is about as much of a kit lens as the Z6 is a Point and Shoot. Well, I'd say the 24-70/4 is about as much of a kit lens as the Z6 is an entry level ILC. Camera manufacturers had/have the habit to offer plasticky lenses in kit with entry level cameras. When I was young(er) , the "kit" lens was the 'ninfty fifty', namely the 50/1.8
I used to own the D750 with 24-120 and always wanted a little bit more reach ( I used to own the D800 with 24-70 f/2.8 too). Looks like the new 24-120 f/4 is a tad bit sharper compared to this, but I think I am happy with this focal range. I even bought the Z 18-140 for my Z50, which makes a really light weight backpacking kit for me. Thanks
As such I have found the 24-70 f/4 a surprisingly useful compact solution for my preferences. No, it's not a 2.8 lens, but I'm mostly using it outdoors, so the extra stop isn't critical, and the
I bought the Z 6II and the R6 along with their 24-70, 28-70 F2, and 70-200 F2.8 just to make sure I gave it a fair shot, and I prefer shooting with the Z 6II. If you're a Nikon shooter that likes Nikon colors, don't bother with the R6. As hard as I tried to put up with Canon colors, I couldn't stand them.
Even the Nikon Z 24-70mm f/4 S lens – also not great with vignetting – never has more than 2.01 stops (24mm, f/4, infinity focus). That’s the same as the 14-30mm f/4 stopped down to f/5.6! However, when zooming in the 14-30mm f/4 to 16mm and beyond, especially at f/5.6 or smaller, it has no real vignetting issues compared to other lenses
Plus the 24-70 is a constant f/4 and if the 24-50 is anything like the other variable aperture Z lenses, you can get to 6.3 pretty quick and thus it's not as nice for indoor use (the 24-70 is about 1.3 stops faster). You can probably find a second hand 24-70 for about $500 USD, so only marginally more than a new 24-50.

The Z6, Z6II, Z7 and Z7II all have in body image stabilization (IBIS). The 24-70 f4 does not, in fact, have VR but the IBIS provides stabilization to most any lens attached to one of the above. This is in contrast to the Z50 which does not have IBIS but depends upon lens VR for image stabilization. P.
For Nikon Z Users, think about this: the Nikon Z 24-70/F4 S usually for 400 EUR, or 450 EUR mint (new)from a Kit Set 2nd Hand, or 1049 EUR for a 28-75/2.8 non-S retail price new. For that 600-650 EUR difference, i'd say the 24-70 F4 S is a top choice for a 1st Party Zoom, especially for Z5 & Z6(II) Users.
